There is a particular quality of light in Positano in October — low, amber, reluctant to arrive and even more reluctant to leave — that I have been trying to describe since I returned home and have not yet managed correctly.
We arrived on a Wednesday, which felt important. The season was ending. Half the restaurants had already shuttered, which meant the ones still open were the ones the locals actually went to. This is information that is impossible to find online and only available through the particular luck of arriving at the wrong time, which turns out to be the right time.

The hotel was called La Fenice, which does not appear in any of the usual places, because it stopped caring about appearing in the usual places sometime around 2003. Twelve rooms. Breakfast on a terrace. A view that made me put down my phone for three consecutive mornings.

I found the ceramics shop on the third day, up a staircase that had no signage and no good reason to climb. The woman who ran it had been making the same pattern — a loose lemon branch, slightly imperfect — for thirty years. I bought four plates and carried them home wrapped in every piece of clothing I brought.

Two plates made the journey intact. One arrived with a hairline fracture I pretend isn't there. The fourth is simply gone — somewhere between Positano and Customs, a ghost plate for a ghost meal I have not yet cooked.
We left on a Sunday. The light was doing the thing it does in October. I took one last photograph from the car window, which I have not looked at since — saving it for a day when I need it most.
